  • Were you prepared for the minimum wage increase and the changes to flexible working?

In April 2024, the United Kingdom witnessed a pivotal moment in its economic landscape as the minimum wage experienced a notable increase. This adjustment, reflective of the government's commitment to bolstering the welfare of its citizens, marked a significant stride towards ensuring fair remuneration for all workers across various sectors. The raise in the minimum wage not only addressed the pressing need for a living wage but also served as a beacon of hope for millions striving to make ends meet in an increasingly challenging economic environment. By elevating the baseline income, the government aimed to alleviate financial strains on low-income households, fostering greater economic stability and social equity within the nation. This increase was not merely a numerical adjustment but a testament to the UK's dedication to fostering inclusive growth and narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest earners. It signified a recognition of the inherent dignity of labour and the invaluable contribution of every worker to the fabric of society. As the new minimum wage took effect, it brought tangible benefits to countless individuals and families, empowering them to meet their basic needs with dignity and pursue a better quality of life. Furthermore, it resonated with the broader ethos of social responsibility, encouraging businesses to prioritize fair compensation practices and invest in the well-being of their workforce. While the minimum wage increase in April 2024 was undoubtedly a positive step forward, it also underscored the ongoing need for vigilance and proactive measures to address evolving economic challenges. By embracing progressive policies and fostering an environment of inclusivity and opportunity, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to building a more equitable and prosperous future for all its citizens. The 2024 NLW is set to be around 30 per cent higher than the adult minimum wage in 2015. This year's NLW increase is also set to be the third largest (real terms) annual increase in its history. The 2024 NLW rate is £11.44, a 10 per cent increase in cash terms on the 2023 NLW (£10.42).27 Mar 2024 For further information, click on the link below:- https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/minimum-wage-rates-for-2024 Flexible Working – April 2024 In April 2024, the landscape of work in the United Kingdom underwent a transformative shift with the expansion of individuals' rights to request to work from home. This pivotal development not only reflected the evolving dynamics of the modern workplace but also recognised the growing importance of flexibility and autonomy in how people choose to fulfil their professional duties. Under the revised legislation, employees were empowered to assert their right to work remotely, acknowledging the diverse needs and circumstances that shape their work-life balance. This right to request remote work represented a significant stride towards fostering a more adaptable and inclusive work environment, one that prioritised individual well-being and productivity. By granting workers the freedom to choose where they perform their duties, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a healthy work-life integration, enabling employees to better manage personal responsibilities while fulfilling professional obligations. This shift also recognized the myriad benefits of remote work, including reduced commuting stress, improved work-life balance, and enhanced productivity stemming from a conducive working environment. Moreover, the expansion of remote work rights underscored the government's recognition of the transformative impact of technology on the nature of work, advocating for policies that embrace innovation and harness its potential to empower individuals in their professional endeavours. This move not only aligned with global trends towards remote work but also positioned the UK as a progressive leader in adapting to the evolving needs of the workforce in the digital age. As individuals exercised their right to request remote work, employers were encouraged to engage in constructive dialogue and accommodate such requests wherever feasible, fostering a culture of mutual respect and trust in the employer-employee relationship. Through collaborative efforts, both parties could harness the benefits of remote work while ensuring the continued success and growth of businesses across various industries. In essence, the expansion of individuals' rights to request remote work in April 2024 heralded a new era of flexibility and empowerment in the UK's labour landscape, setting the stage for a more resilient, adaptable, and inclusive future of work. • Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Skills Shortage in the Construction Industry

In recent years, the construction industry has been confronted with a formidable challenge: a significant shortage of skilled workers. This issue has sent ripples throughout the sector, impacting projects of all sizes and adding to existing challenges. As the demand for construction projects continues to rise globally, it becomes increasingly imperative to address this skills gap head-on. Understanding the Skills Shortage One of the primary factors contributing to the skills shortage in construction is the aging workforce. Many skilled workers are approaching retirement age, and there simply aren't enough younger workers entering the industry to fill the gap. This trend has been worsened by a lack of interest among younger generations in pursuing careers in construction. Instead, many are opting for careers in technology, healthcare, or other industries perceived as more glamorous or lucrative. Furthermore, the construction industry has struggled to attract and retain diverse talent. Historically, it has been perceived as male-dominated, with limited opportunities for women and minorities. Efforts to diversify the workforce have been met with challenges, further exacerbating the skills shortage. Impact on the Industry The skills shortage in construction has far-reaching implications for the industry as a whole. Projects are being delayed or scaled back due to a lack of skilled labour, leading to increased costs and frustrated clients. Construction firms are also grappling with higher employee turnover rates as workers are lured away by competing industries offering better pay and benefits. Moreover, the quality of workmanship may suffer as inexperienced workers are brought in to fill the gaps. This can lead to safety concerns, code violations, and ultimately tarnish the reputation of the construction company involved. Addressing the Challenges To tackle the skills shortage in the construction industry, a multi-faceted approach is needed: Education and Training Programs: Investing in vocational training and apprenticeship programs is crucial for attracting and developing the next generation of skilled construction workers. By partnering with schools, colleges, and trade organisations, the industry can promote careers in construction and provide pathways for individuals to gain the necessary skills and qualifications. Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: Creating a more inclusive work environment is essential for attracting a diverse range of talent to the construction industry. Companies should actively recruit women, minorities, and individuals from underrepresented communities, and provide support and mentorship to help them succeed in their careers. Improving Working Conditions: Addressing the perception of construction as a physically demanding and low-paying job is key to attracting and retaining skilled workers. Offering competitive wages, benefits, and opportunities for career advancement can help make construction careers more appealing to job seekers. Embracing Technology: Leveraging technology and innovation can help streamline construction processes, increase productivity, and reduce the reliance on manual labour. From building information modelling (BIM) software to drones and robotics, adopting new technologies can make construction more efficient and attractive to a tech-savvy workforce. Conclusion The skills shortage in the construction industry is a complex and pressing issue that requires immediate attention and concerted action from all stakeholders. By investing in education and training, promoting diversity and inclusion, improving working conditions, and embracing technology, the industry can begin to bridge the gap and ensure a sustainable future for construction. Only by addressing these challenges head-on can we build a stronger, more resilient construction industry for generations to come.

  • Lip Sync Battle - In aid of Shelter UK

'So this time last week I was extremely nervous as my time on stage grew nearer and nearer. I'd never been on stage to do something like this before so I was genuinely terrified! But, I'd finally get the chance to live as Will Smith for a couple of minutes, putting on a show alongside some other awesome contestants and dancers from the Hammond School in Chester..... Even better still that it was all for a great cause' On the run up to the Lip Sync Battle, Jon had to attend 3 hours worth of rehearsals to enable him to learn the routine as well as the mash up he was going to perform: Will Smith - Getting Jiggy With It mixed with The Sugarhill Gang - Apache (in true Fresh Prince style!). These rehearsals also happened to fall on the hottest day recorded this year, so extra respect there! The dancers from the Hammond School, Chester, made sure he was at ease and absolutely wowed him with their skills and professionalism, obviously they'd done it before!! Before the show started, the Contestants, which also included Rihanna, Britney, Sylvester, Ricky Martin, Lady Gaga & Beyonce, Diana Ross and Oasis, were put through their paces with 3 dress rehearsals to ensure everything went smoothly on the night. At 7pm, the doors opened and in came the crowd, Jon admits you could feel the tension building throughout the Contestants but each and every one of them still keen to get out there and do their thing! And what a great night it was! Lots of fun, laughter and water thrown everywhere (Jon was extra happy to point out the Crossword Recruitment table to Billy (aka Rihanna) in order for him to concentrate his splashing efforts in their direction!). But there was a serious cause behind the fun and laughter..... Homelessness in the UK is a MASSIVE problem!!! Shelter UK provide support for millions of people across the UK. They exist to 'defend the right to a safe home. Because home is everything' and we couldn't agree more. Crossword Recruitment are committed to helping Shelter UK raise money so they can continue their great work. Last weeks Lip Sync Battle helped raise over £5000!! Right now, thousands of people are trying to get by without a safe place to call home. Your support could help Shelter UK answer the next call from someone facing homelessness - you can find their site here - https://england.shelter.org.uk/

  • What are the consequences of a bad hire?

How much will it cost my business if I get recruitment wrong? Finding the right employee is crucial in ensuring efficiency in the workplace, should you get it wrong and make what we call a “bad hire”, this could affect your whole business. According to Oxford Economics and Unum, 'the average cost of taking on an employee, on a salary of £25k, is £30,165 - which takes into account an average spend of £5,433 on recruitment and the loss of productivity while training the new employee to a certain level of proficiency. Should the employee progress as planned then your business will recoup these losses. If they don’t however, this will cost you in the long term; a poor hire at mid-manager level with a salary of £42,000 can cost a business more than £132,000 due to the accumulation of costs associated with the recruitment process, such as training, onboarding, wasted salary and much more!' What are the consequences of a bad hire? Monetary costs such as wasted salary, compensation, training, loss of business and rehiring costs. However, there are many non-monetary costs associated with a bad hire too: Increased workload – Current employees may have to fill in for a role that is currently vacant during the re-hiring process, this leads to a bigger workload and increased stress. Staff turnover – a bad hire may cause good employees to leave the company, as trust weakens. Low morale – if the team begins to struggle and friction occurs, morale can be affected, leading to a loss of productivity. So, how can we at Crossword Recruitment help you find the right fit for your needs and reduce the risk of a bad hire? When working with us, we ensure that all candidates are fully vetted and verified prior to beginning the role. The talent pool that we have access to is considerably bigger, we can utilise our vast database of candidates, our expansive social media networks as well as sector specific job boards. We’re equipped to respond quickly and effectively no matter how urgent your hire is. We have an in-depth, rigorous process that we go through with every candidate to ensure they match what our clients are looking for - we will be releasing another blog in the near future to tell you exactly how our process works, so keep an eye out on our socials and our website! Already swamped HR teams and Hiring Managers have enough on their plate without having to handle recruitment too – let us take the load, and make sure your 'recruitment is done properly!'

  • Should I contact a recruitment agency when looking for a new job?

Contacting a recruitment agency can be a beneficial step when looking for a new job. Recruitment agencies specialise in connecting job seekers with potential employers, and they can provide several advantages in your job search: 1. Access to job opportunities: Recruitment agencies often have access to a wide range of job vacancies, including positions that may not be advertised publicly. They can provide you with information about job openings that suit your skills, experience, and career goals. 2. Industry expertise: Recruitment agencies typically have in-depth knowledge of specific industries and can offer insights into the job market trends, salary expectations, and skill requirements. They can provide guidance on how to tailor your application and further improve your chances of success. 3. Personalised assistance: Working with a recruitment agency can provide you with personalised assistance throughout the job search process. They can help I many different ways such as providing interview coaching and offer valuable feedback on your application to enhance your chances of landing a job. 4. Networking opportunities: Recruitment agencies often have established relationships with various employers, giving you access to a vast network of potential job opportunities. However, it's important to note that recruitment agencies may not be suitable for everyone or every situation. Here are a few considerations: 1. Industry and job type: Recruitment agencies tend to specialise in certain industries or job types. If you're looking for a specific type of role or working in a niche industry, it's essential to find an agency that has expertise in that area. 2. Research and reputation: Not all recruitment agencies are created equal. Before engaging with an agency, conduct thorough research to ensure they have a good reputation, positive reviews, and a track record of successful placements. Seek recommendations from colleagues or friends who have had positive experiences with recruitment agencies. Even if you are currently employed, getting in touch with a recruitment agency can still be the right choice. We are working on your behalf; therefore, we can do so at your discretion -  your current employer doesn’t have to know you are actively looking for another opportunity elsewhere – so you don’t have to worry about being treated differently in your current role. Ultimately, the decision to contact a recruitment agency depends on your specific circumstances, preferences, and the job market you're targeting. Consider the pros and cons, evaluate your needs, and determine if working with a recruitment agency aligns with your job search strategy.

  • What is the difference between contract and permanent recruitment?

What is the difference between Contract and Permanent recruitment? There are two types of recruitment we deal with, Contract and Permanent (or Perm). It can all get a bit confusing to someone who doesn’t know the difference – luckily, we’re here to tell you… The main difference between contract and permanent recruitment lies in the nature and duration of employment. Here's a breakdown of the two: 1.    Permanent Recruitment: ·     In permanent recruitment, employers seek to hire individuals for long-term, ongoing positions within their organisation. ·     Permanent employees are typically hired on a permanent basis and are expected to work for an indefinite period. ·     Permanent positions are well-suited for roles that require continuity, stability, and long-term commitment, such as managerial positions, core staff, or specialized roles within a company. 2.    Contract Recruitment: ·     Contract recruitment involves hiring individuals for a specific project, a fixed-term assignment, or a predetermined duration of time. ·     Contract employees work for a defined period, which could range from a few weeks to several months or even years, depending on the nature of the project. ·     Contract employees are often hired to fulfil temporary or seasonal demands, to cover for employee absences, or to bring in specialised skills or expertise. ·     Contract employees are typically paid on an hourly or daily basis. ·     Contract positions offer flexibility for both employers and employees. Employers can adjust their workforce based on project requirements, and employees can gain diverse experience by working on various assignments. That’s it. Hopefully you will now be clued up on the differences between contract and permanent recruitment.
